Description

Double page spread illustration for my coffee table book that I'm doing for uni.
It's called The Dragons of 'Dragon Delusion' and as the title suggests is about the dragons that will appear in my graphic novel C:

this is the accompanying text:
"
Life cycle

Western Dragon eggs are large, round and mostly off-white in colouration. Speckled or oddly coloured eggs are a sign of poor health, malnutrition or disease, the moment they appear the parents will quickly destroy it as weak hatchlings will only die later. The offspring or hatchlings are born without colours or powers, nor do they have the strength in their wings to fly, they are born white with grey, pink, blue or red eyes. If there are any weak or unusually small hatchlings, the parents may sometimes kill them, as they will only get killed by others later. As they grow older into adolescents, they darken into grey or brown colours, but sometimes they stay white.

Initiation Ceremony

Once a Western Dragon reaches the cusp of maturity, it is sent to fight against others of its age for the rights to their own power. The battles are watched closely by chosen older dragons who act as referees, family and friends of the fighting dragons will often be spectators. If the parents have not killed them by now, then it is at this stage that the weak or stunted young dragons die fighting against their bigger, stronger opponent. It is a battle to show off skill and strength. The battling duo is given a short span of time to kill their opponent, if there are no deaths – which is the most common outcome- the winner is decided by who has the least wounds. The losing survivor must wait until next season to fight for their chance at power until they win or die trying. The winning dragon is lead to a cave that is always guarded by two dragons, in this cave is a magical crystal artefact which grants the dragons power. The dragon cannot choose its power; rather the power chooses the dragon. The dragons appearance changes somewhat to match the ability it has received. Young dragons who have just received their powers cause the most damage because they are irresponsible and reckless, and are the ones responsible for the humans’ belief that they are creatures from hell.
